Pros: There is enough place to put inside GU10 1*1W 320~350mA Constant Current Regulated LED Driver (85~265V AC) or GU10 3*1W version.
There is even enough space to put there MR11 mcpcb with 3 leds and MR11 optics - so with the appropriate driver you can make small 9W - 500 lumen bulb. The heatsink is big enough to cool it down.

Cons: Don't use these small screws that you will find in the package - they are to soft to be screwed in to the alloy body.
You need a strong glue to put all parts together.

Other: Nice product for LED light maniacs who want to make their own light bulbs.

Pros: Finally a DIY light housing for the LED geeks to start building high-quality, low cost LED lighting.

Cons: Finish on the housing is rough/sharp. Threads need worked to get everything tight.
Mouting plate should be sanded and polished for better thermal conductivity - tooling marks are really bad in the two I received.
    Provided screws are worthless.

Other: Buy them by the boat-loads and show your friends and family that usable LED lighting does not have to cost hundreds of dollars.

  • Works well With Cree XR-E Star

posted by oBoBo on 14:48:19 G9T 21/09/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Theres lots of room for drivers in the base.
The large optic throws very nicely at 39" (~1meter) the beam 20" wide when used with a Cree XR-E
Great heatsinking, with a 3watt LED driven by 1x3W GU10 Driver the heatsink registers at 112 Degrees F (45C)
    The Screws hold well

Cons: The optic rattles around when using a Cree XR-E. Maybe if a SSC P4 or LuxeonIII works it won't. More information from Manufacturer would help.

Other: It works great with a 3watt Cree
    Make your own LED Spotlight,
Now we just need Neutral White LEDs

  • Awesome Round heatsink

posted by ahorton on 04:25:58 G10T 01/10/2008 certificated customer

Pros: Great heatsink. I'll be buying more soon.
Nice thick aluminium base that fits my star MCPCBs perfectly. The pre-drilled holes are all in very useful spots for adding a star.
I tested the heat transfer between two parts when they were just screwed together without any thermal grease. I heated the base with a 60W soldering iron in the centre and found the outer fins warmed up almost straight away. Even after a few minutes of running the base was always cool enough to touch. Without the fins, the base was too hot to touch within 30 seconds. So I'm very happy with the heat exchange between the base - fins - air.
The cylinder part of the heatsink is threaded at both ends so you can flip it around either way.
The threads are fine on the one I got.

Cons: Tooling marks were visible on the outer parts of the fins. This doesn't bother me. The rest of the heatsink didn't show any marks.

Other: I can see how these would make neat little LED lights. It would be easy to add a driver in the screw base.
As for me, it's a perfect heatsink that will make a very neat headtorch.

  • Perfect host for bike light

posted by KentS on 01:43:58 G1T 20/01/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Very efficient heatsink. I attached a CREE R2 star with thermal glue and added thermal grease to all threads. With the LED driven at 700mA all of the casing is warm within minutes. The Star itself is still only lukewarm.
Any 35mm optics seems to fit. I used two of these casings for a home made bike light. One of them has the optics supplied - it doesn't fit CREE perfectly but still gives a useful 15-20 degree beam. The other one has a 10 degree optics. Together they give a very nice beam. I also tested another 35mm optics, it fitted fine but I didn't like the beam profile.

Cons: Not watertight. This can be solved with some O-rings and silicone.

Since it is meant as a light bulb not a bike light, attaching it to some kind of mount that goes on the bike takes some working out.
I ordered three - diameter of holes for attaching housing differed between them.

Other: Very good and stylish heatsink. With the added airflow of a bike light application it would probably be good enough for 3 CREE, MC-E or even SSC P7 application.

  • Good host for 21mm Star

posted by KentS on 05:51:31 G1T 27/01/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

    Pros: Easy to mount star.
Perfect heat sink: With thermal glue on the star and thermal grease on all threads, thermal management is excellent. I use two of these for a bike light. With the airflow around the fins I am pretty sure that this heat sink could handle even an ssc p7 or CREE MC-E.
All-round size: all 35mm optics I've tried fit. I use the supplied one and sku.4544. The supplied optics is about 20 degrees.

Cons: Not watertight (but it's supposed to be used as a light bulb, so that is to be expected).
All drilled holes for attaching the base of the bulb were not equally sized.

Other: Very versatile sku. A very good buy, I will get more.

Pros: Fantastic little enclosure. Easy to fit LED on 20mm Star. Plenty of heat sinking from the aluminium pill and head. Everything you need except LED and driver (even included a 20mm star circuit board). Suitable for Seoul/Luxeon style LEDs

Cons: None with the product, but could do with a SES and BC version.

Other: $5.16 for housing $4.15 for Seoul P4 LED $3.23 for 3W Driver $12.54 total cost $14.10 for similar ready made $1.56 Saving ;o)

  • COOLEST thing EVER!

posted by pinkytube on 07:26:57 G10T 08/10/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This is the GREATEST! I made myself a home bulb, and its at least 3x brighter than the 48 led's they sell here. I used a the small 1w driver, and epoxy'd it into the base, and the wires really install easy on this base without even soldering! The holes are there and the wires are held in my pressure. I applied thermal grease onto the cree I bought, soldered it on, and VOILA!

Cons: Its hard to solder the wires on the cree because this is such a good heat sink it's pretty hard to get the solder to melt to take the wire. But thats ok!

Other: I just ordered more, I want to make a lot more for my home since these should last 20000+ hours.

Pros: : + solder free connection to mains side + unpopulated 21 mm star included + cooling ribs for keeping LED temperature low + drivers such as sku.13552 fit perfectly + compact, much smaller than a CFL bulb + black/silver fins look pretty hi-tech when screwed into socket

Cons: : - sharp burrs at cooling ribs - I had wished for a duroplast isolation between E27 thread and the hot contact tip.

Other: If you are unsatisfied with the choice of LED bulbs available, because of brightness or light temperatur (colour) concerns, this is an exellent host to assemble your own: Just add driver and a 21 mm star mounted power LED (for ease), or solder a LED of your choice to the included star. The result will be a bright, energy efficient light for a very competitive price.

  • Great DIY Mains Powered LED Lamp Housing

posted by lyonn on 23:52:35 G7T 07/07/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: - a great host for 220VAC powered DIY LED lamps
    - provides adequate heatsink for power LED emitters
    - easy to assemble and use
    - allows solderless AC line connection of the LED driver
    - comes with all the materials that you would need to build an LED spot light housing and spare screws
    - build quality is acceptable

Cons: - price could be lower
    - the threads for the lens retainer are a bit loose
    - there are no mounting holes or screws for the star
    - edges are a bit sharp
    - doesn't allow option to build a wide angle/flood lamp

Other: I would recommend this product for DIY mains powered LED lamp projects.
