Flash Diffuser Umbrella (Large)
This translucent umbrella is a great addition to your studio setup. This umbrella works well to diffuse the light from any flash, creating a soft even light for your subject. The lack of a black backing gives this umbrella the ability to flash through the umbrella if needed and simulate the effects of a softbox. Portability is a plus for location shots. This size is good for head shots and small to medium sized products.

  • NOT a Reflector Umbrella

posted by tcrosman on 17:07:08 G12T 04/12/2007 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Decent umbrella but not a reflector. Seems a bit better made than two I got on EBay.

Cons: This is a shoot through umbrella NOT a Reflector. If you need a reflector get the other one offered on DX.

Other: Decent price and quality on a shoot through.

Pros: Shoot through umbrella at good price. No branding on it so you can use any part of the umbrella for consistent results.

Cons: The stiching on one of the ends of the umbrella broke or came undone after the first 4 times I opened it.

Not difficult to repair, just a bit fiddly.

Other: worth getting one or two if you use umbrellas.

Pros: Really cheap shoot-through umbrella. That really works! And I really like it very much. As mentioned above You still need to do some modifications to it in order not to squash it in your umbrella stand. But I think it is ordinary “to do” then You buy an umbrella.

Cons: Non that I could say here. Well, despite You still need to do some modifications.

Other: If You need this kind of umbrella - just get it! You can not beat the price anyway.

Pros: Really amazing quality product. When ordered it - thought it will be just for fun, but now I reallize this thing involves me into photography more and more. Can be use to spread/soften light on some objects. It works like some kind if soft-box for a beginner.

Cons: Really none I can think of.

Other: Now ordering one more for myself. 1 is not enough allready for me :)

  • Great value, geat a few to try out

posted by ososumi on 04:23:29 G6T 07/06/2008 certificated customer

Pros: Great value, light, reasonable size when opened. Work well for shoot through umbrealla.

Cons: Length is ok but not really compact. Not as compact as doublefold westcot umbrellas.
Umbrella shaft is hollow and prone to crimping. Put a pencil in it to stop that happening in an umbrella adaptor.

Other: If you get 1, you should get a second for the clamshell effect. Might actually get another one so I can light on the other side of the model.

  • Good product for the price

posted by MrPromee on 00:44:20 G7T 08/07/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Others have commented on problems with the stitching on arrival but mine came in great condition.
It works exactly like it's supposed to.

Cons: As others have mentioned, the shaft is a hollow tube - nothing too out of the ordinary but you may want to insert something in the end to keep the mount from crushing it when tightened.

Other: I'm probably going to order a couple more to have on hand. At this price, a backup or two is a no-brainer.

  • Soften Your Lighting

Pros: Cheapest I have found for an umbrella of this size.
Softens your light to prevent harsh shadows.
Small, light and portable. Great for on the go lighting.

Cons: Came with a rust spot, but isn't noticeable. Not sure where it came from.
Feels cheap, but keeps it light and easy to move around.

Other: Need to buy a few more for my other speedlights. I wish DX sold some cheap light stands as well.

  • Great for price

posted by mostsb on 12:33:26 G2T 26/02/2009 certificated customer

Pros: Diffuses light nicely, and is much cheaper than ones in my country. Plastic caps are good for safety. So cheap that you can order new if old one is broken.

Cons: Quality would be better, some plastic caps broken and seams are unraveled. Light diffusing isn't best what I could imagine. Metal bends easily.

Other: For price this umbrella is really good. Even diffusing would be better, it is good enough for non-pro photographer.

Pros: Bought this for a video project and it works a charm. No fuss, no problem; just works.
I set it up with a 150 watts halogen and I although I did not use full power, it did not get too hot.
Reflected light is just right for non-harsh look for my vide work.
    Great product!

    Cons: None so far.

posted by inielsen on 07:15:12 G3T 29/03/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Cheap enough and yet sufficient quality to be used. I can carry around inside the bag I have for my tripod (together with the tripod, of course :-).

Cons: A minor and expected one; at first I had no way to mount it. My tripod only carries the flash. But see "other thoughts"

Other: A nice buy, cheap enough if you, like m, want to figure out what you can use a flash umbrella for.
