  • Good, but no flux.

    Pros: Cheap thin desoldering wick.

Cons: Mine had absolutely no flux on it so it would not absorb any solder, this was however easily remedied since i ordered some resin flux at the same time, i just dipped the wick in liquid flux and it worked like a charm.

Other: If this is indeed coated in flux and the fact that mine came uncoated is just a mistake, it is agreat deal at this price.

Pros: You get a lot of de-soldering braid for a very low cost. There IS flux on these products (unlike what some other reviewers mentioned) and it does a good job of removing solder.

Cons: The thickness is not ideal for very small soldering points. However, if you need a smaller width braid, just buy a smaller one from DX!

Other: Are you going to be de-soldering electronics now or in the future? If yes, then BUY THIS!

  • Does the job.

Pros: It absorbs solder. That's the purpose of the product and it does it well...sometimes. You can tell it works if the copper turns grey as it picks up the solder. There are english instructions if you are confused.

Cons: At times, it doesn't seem to work. I ended up heating stuff up to damaging temperatures and still the thing doesn't absorb any solder. It is a hit and miss, and to solve it, I cutted off the wick a bit, and did the same, which then worked again.

Other: Maybe it was just mine, but this is still worth getting.

Other: Works well for smaller jobs or for cleaning up a larger job. If you have a larger desoldering job to do, you may want to use a desoldering pump (vaccuum pump) to remove most of the solder, then clean up the remainder with the wick.

  • Tin sponge

posted by erdabyz on 08:37:54 G10T 02/10/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: -Absorbs solder like a sponge. A lot of solder.
-It's made of copper which is very thermal conductive, so most heat you apply to desolder won't heat the component.
-Doesn't produce fumes or bad smells

Cons: If any, it comes in a dispenser which has a problem. If you cut the wick very close to the aperture of the dispenser, the end of the wick can get inside, and you'll have to destroy the dispenser.

Other: High quality, 1,5 meters and lots of components to recover.
If you wanna work with very small SMD components, buy a thinner one (1.5mm)

  • Really works great

posted by zmeios on 12:30:00 G12T 20/12/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: I use desoldering braid a lot, mostly for SMT soldering work on fine electronics. I have used many brands. This particular SKU has worked even better for me than 'pro' quality stuff sold at serious distributor shops.
Perhaps the best thing about this wick is the quality of the flux. There is plenty of flux with the copper, and it is REALLY no-clean, unlike some of its chinese competitors (which do not seem to know the meaning of no-clean).

Cons: If you use this a lot, you need to order several rolls, as 1.5m are less than they sound. And this doesn't normally apply to casual soldering iron users.

Other: Very good quality, esp. the chemistry of the integral flux.

  • awesome!

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: - very very cheap price
    - does it's job very well
    - good build quality
    - made of real copper (at least it seems like copper :P)

Cons: there are none. Beside there could be a little more of it in the package. if you need to desolder alot. you might want to consider buying 2 or more of those.

Other: i have bought this to desolder some solder spots on my wii's mainboard. After heating the solder up it could be removed very easily. it worked very well! Everyone should have one if those in their solder toolbox! I would buy it anytime again!
