  • Great for old IDE hard drives

    posted by KooPa79 on 01:30:26 G12T 31/12/2007 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Useful for converting an IDE hard drive for use with a SATA-only motherboard. So you can use all those old IDE disks that you may have laying around. It's small so if you have multiple disks directly above eachother you still can use this.

Cons: When removing it from the hard drive it seems a little fragile.
I have not been able to make this work with DVD-roms. This is why I only give it 4/5

Other: It converts an IDE PATA hard drive to SATA drive for use on a SATA mainboard.

  • Great Price, Does what Its Job Well

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Converts IDE drives to SATA without any software additions needed. Stores are selling similar items at a lot more expensive.

Cons: There are no instruction manuals that came with it. Small compact design makes it very easy to miss plug it in either the wrong way or not in all the pins. Requires more adapters on some PSUs because the adapter itself needs a separate power plug in addition to the IDE drive itself.

Other: This is a cheap, simple, and fast solution to converting your IDE drives to SATA.

  • Small and Efficient

Pros: Fits my old IDE drives just fine; Came with the SATA Cable and the Power Plug Adapter; Worked just fine with a 40GB Maxtor and a 80GB Seagate

    Cons: Just like most of these adapters, it is kind of loose and has no protection at all (no plastic cover of any sort);
    It uses an extra power connection to activate the circuit;
It came with no manuals (but it wasn't hard to figure out what connects to what).

Other: Works fine and somewhat easy to use. I'm satisfied with it.

Pros: Very cheap. Works fine (when you get it to work with your HDD). Comes with all the cables needed.

Cons: Doesn´t fit very well with my IDE seagate HDD, but finally i manage to get it in position.
Don´t have manual or user guide.
    Seems very fragile.

Other: If you need one of these and knows a little about computers buy it. If you don´t, better search for another one with manual (or ask someone to help you ;) )

  • Works great with my dvd burner

posted by winterchild on 18:19:24 G12T 26/12/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Works great with my ide dvd burner, now plugged in as an SATA device. All cables are included making it easy. The ide connector is keyed so it will only go in the one way, which makes up for the lack of instructions!
ata4: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
    ata4.00: ATAPI: HL-DT-STDVD-RAM GSA-H22N, 1.02, max UDMA/66
    ata4.00: configured for UDMA/66

Cons: Had to fiddle around with the jumpers on my dvd or my system would not even boot but once I got it right, it works great!

Other: if you have an older ide cdrom/dvd/hdd kicking around, this might just be the thing to get some more life out of it!

  • Tiny, but handy converter

posted by zxnihundre on 14:32:33 G2T 10/02/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This handy little item is a problem solver these days, when the motherboard producers have been reducing costs by including only one IDE port. For those of you who have older components, such as an IDE hard disk or IDE CD/DVDRW burner, just plug the included Sata cable into the motherboard Sata socket, and the other end of the Sata cable into the converter. Then plug both the included Floppy power cable into the converter and a power supply power cable (or adapter), called Molex, in your PC case. Finally set the jumper on your IDE device to "Master", plug the converter into the IDE hard disk or IDE burner/player, insert a Molex power plug into the same IDE unit.

Cons: No manual included, could be all kinds of problems, like incompatible burners (Nec ND-3500A) or software issues, BIOS-settings and so on.

Other: If you're no novice - buy this converter.

  • Works great!

    posted by n4zou on 22:49:44 G4T 10/04/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Works perfectly! I had an old 30 GiB hard drive just laying around so I plugged this little device where the ribbon cable would have gone and plugged in the power and SATA cables. The BIOS found it as did my Windows and Linux operating systems.

Cons: Be careful of shorting out the 4 power pins. They can touch the metal case of hard drive. I put a little peace of tape on the metal case where the pins could come in contact and accidentally short them out. No big deal really and may not be a problem with all drives.

    Other: Good product.

  • It works

posted by tutils on 23:38:50 G5T 23/05/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: It works and it's cheap. It is compact enough to be plugged into any device without interfering. No speed degradation noticed with my CD-RW drive (didn't use it for a real hard-disk though). It requires a 4 pin power cable, which is included with the package, although you can use the floppy drive cable from your PSU. A SATA cable is also included.

Cons: At first the BIOS wouldn't recognize the drive, but after trying all jumper configurations it finally worked with "cable-select".
Build quality is good enough for one-time installation, but I wouldn't recommend on moving it from device to device on a regular basis.
The caption on the package can be misleading. This is an IDE to SATA converter, not the other way around.

Other: I'm buying another one for my DVD drive.

  • what a steal

posted by emiliogon on 16:12:45 G8T 02/08/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: - zero config other than cable fiddling
    - uses a floppy power connector, so you can finally use one of those power supply outputs meant for the floppy no one uses anymore.
    - comes with cables!

Cons: - the through-hole connector pins can touch the case of the attached drive. this shouldn't really be a problem, as drive cases are often painted and this solder appears coated... but i still put a piece of electrical tape over the back before mounting.

Other: a great answer for modern motherboards that have only one IDE channel. my Asus mobo has one IDE channel and like 6 SATA channels, and i have one IDE HD, one SATA HD, and TWO IDE optical drives. that means one optical drive was out in the cold before i got this - but now, i can use an old DVD drive as a dedicated game disc drive!

  • Great gadget!

posted by Diarto on 15:35:47 G2T 07/02/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: -It's small -Comes with SATA cable and a power cable converter Molex-Mini molex -Doesn't require any installation what so ever -Works with Windows 7

Cons: -Has an orange LED for connection confirmation, might be an issue for one who's into case modification -Package was alright, but the mini molex connector on the chip was bent so had to be pushed back. Works fine though.

Other: GREAT gadget for anyone who has an old hard drive and no empty IDE connector and loads of SATA connectors.
