  • Works as advertised, 110 too

Pros: Easy to use and install, works with any existing remote, universal socket, works with 110V (didn't test 220V), no batteries needed.

Cons: Remote not included, side sockets do not seem to work, need line-of-sight to operate, which is tricky since you need to point the remote at the socket and the power cable blocks the line of sight.

Other: Works as advertised, 110V OK. Cool gadget.

    Pros: very good idea!
every one who seen this wanted to get one.
works nicely and the IR is working great.
turns on and off from a long distance.
works with every remote that I tried
    very easy to use!
I connected it to light and turn it with my projector remote so I can turn the projector on and the lights off with the same remote and it is great

Cons: The built inside is not so good and safe.
fuse will be important in case of short or overload, witch is possible if you exceed 500W as marked.

Other: buy one. just don't use it over 500W
    you will enjoy

Pros: - Easy to use after you figure out what needs to be done
    - can solve many problems and turn almost any device controllable for on/off.

Cons: - Even the 220V version comes with American plugs, so I had to connect a simple pin adapter to plug it in the European socket in my house. it's not that much hassle, but it's becoming a series of 3 devices one on another, which doesn't seem too safe.
I wish they would sell a European version as well.
    - It's working on IR, not Radio, so anything can block the signal, you should understand that before you decide if it suites you.
    - It comes with no English instructions, and I had to read some posts here to understand that the button is on/off, and that training is done bye turning it on, holding the button until the red light blinks, pressing the remote button, and releasing.

Other: If you can live with it's cons, it might be a goos solution for you.

Pros: As explained, just plug it in and press the "train" button while pressing ANY button on ANY remote control! So I am using the TV's remote control. It's very usefull, for example, for switching power to a lamp located behind a furniture or in a narrow area.
I am planning to use the "Flat to Round Power Plug Convertor" (see item number 3529), as I am in Paris, France.

Cons: - Of course, it could be "European" by default, instead of US. Let's bet that when the demand will be enough, then the manufacturer and / or DX will follow.

Other: Something so cheap, simple, and usefull, should be sold in every shop here in France! It allows to lazy Frenchmen like me to save electrical power (and the World too... whithout any cheerleader interfering) by being able to access remotely any electrical appliance.
Because, as everyone knows, the less power we use, the better our future might be.

Pros: Works really well! Can get IR signals that bounce off walls too. Works with all the remotes I tried. It remembers the signal even when unplugged! I took it apart and integrated it into a light switch.

Cons: Build quality is iffy. Wouldn't trust this with something more than a desk lamp or similar. Its 220v yet comes with American prongs... I took mine apart so no big deal.
Rated at 500W but I wouldn't bet on it...

Other: A cheap, smart alternative to the "Clapper".
Really good for lazy slobs! Get one!

Pros: Works just as advertised. I currently have my room lamp connected to this device. My lamp is about 12-15ft away from my bed and I can turn off the light with no problem, even with some minor interference from grocery bags and backpack in the way. I use my Harmony remote, however this device works basically with any IR remote. My wife uses the Phillips television remote to control this device. Very easy to teach the device to learn a command. Hold the black button on the device, wait until it blinks, press a button on the remote (which is pointing to the device) so it learns the command, and then you get one final blink and your done!

Cons: Really can't think of none. The price is great. I'm fairly sure if Home Depot carries anything evenr remotely similar it will cost me 15-20 dolalrs more.

Other: Buying a clapper came to mind but it would be too disruptive since we have a newborn in the room. Besides people are fairly easily amazed when you demonstrate that your remote can control the light within your home. I might buy a couple more of these for Xmas gifts. If mildly interested or unsure I still recommend a purchase. You will not be dissatisfied.

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: -Easy to use (hold the small black button until the red light is blinking and do the same with the desired button on your tv remote)
-smaller than expected, about half the width of multi-socket adapters.

Cons: -Rather pricey for a device that serves one purpose.
-Does not come in 3-pin but instead in a 2-thin-plate-pins that is unusable in Singapore's power socket unless you get a travel adapter for it.

Other: This device is cool and a cheap way to make your house or room automated with just one tv remote.
Normal methods of automating your room would cost over a hundred and requires the use of another remote control for it.

  • Works OK in Australian power socket

posted by MicrowaveDave on 11:25:54 G3T 06/03/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: The two parallel power prongs are in fact designed to be rotated 45 degrees if necessary, so they fit the 45 degree Australian power sockets. They can be rotated both ways, so the plug can point up from the socket or hang down.
The device can also turn things on or off without the remote control, just press the small black button once.
Quite small considering what it does.

Cons: The two side sockets are useless in Australia and many countries with wide plugs. No ground connector either, so won't work safely for all appliances.
The power socket on top is poorly weighted, so plugging something heavy into it makes the entire device fall out of the wall. It should only be used for light things (heavy power packs may not work)
The black button is extremely small, could be a bit bigger for easy use.

Other: Handy as both a travel adapter and IR remote control device.

  • Great set

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Easy to use set. Just press the button on the unit, and press the preferred button on your remote control, and it just works.

Cons: When your need a simple set to reduce your electricitybill, just buy this unit. Keep in mind that a cablereciever has an average use of 25 watt in stand-by. And what about audioset, DVD-players etc. etc.

Other: The unit itself uses about 11 watt. Okay, there are sets which uses about 1 watt or less, but for those sets you will pay about 45 euro.
So this set has a reasonable price/quality. If you need it, buy it!

Pros: I've been looking for a device like this for a long time. It'll work with any infrared remote, unlike much more expensive solutions that come with their own remote. It's simple to program and the power can also be switched on/off with the small button. It's also quite sensitive, you really don't have to aim very precise at it. According to my measurements, it uses less than 1 watt, so it makes for an excellent standbykiller.

Cons: Why oh why is it not available with Schuko (common in continental Europe) connectors? If I had to I'd pay double for this thing if it had Schuko connectors! It does work with adapters, but I have only one word for Edison plugs: dodgy! (how can Edison plugs still be legal in the USA?) Also, ground is lacking. This is the only reason it gets 3 points for usefulness because it limits the places where it can be installed. With Schuko connectors, that would have been 5!
A minor con could be the button, if used often I'm afraid it might break. Under normal conditions you hardly ever need the button though, so usually this won't be a problem.

Other: There are no other products like this one. Any standbykiller stores try to sell you won't work as well as this one because they are "dumb". This device actually learns the IR-code from your remote, which is what you want.
This kind of device should be available on every corner of the streets (with Schuko plugs). Since it isn't (it's very hard to find), buy it from DX!
