Pros: Gives a working parallel port and works under linux. No special drivers needed. Works with Jtag adapers.
Cons: None
Other: Don't have enough parallel ports on your computer for jtag adapters/stepper control/whatever? Get this.
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: Price.
Cons: Driver supplied did not work for me. Manufacture's driver is here:
http://www.moschip.com/html/MCS9805.html
Other: If you bought a new computer and it did not have a parallel port, and you need one, this may be what you need.
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: These are inexpensive, solid cards that worked on every system (W98 and XP) I installed them in. The Windows XP Control Panel driver configuration even allows you to set interrupt usage -- none, avoid if possible, or use freely.
Cons: Plug-and-pray sees the card as a PCI Simple Communication Controller, not a printer port, so you do need to install the driver from the supplied mini-CD.
Other: Good value for the price.
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: Adds a standard parallel port to a PC
Works better than a USB/Parallel convertor because it actually shows as a parallel port and not a USB printing device. This means that it also works for scanner devices!
Very cheap compared to other manufacturers.
Easy to install, just like any other PCI card.
Works with most DIY programmers for microcontrollers. I use it mainly for WinAVR using AVR-Dude, but it worked with my PIC programmer aswell.
Works with linux, tested it on Gentoo with 2.6 kernel.
Cons: Doesn't use legacy I/O addresses. Some programs might have problems with that. But if you can configure the I/O address manually you should have no problems.
Not a 3.3V (PCI 2.0) compatible card. It does not fit in my server which only has PCI-X slots.
Doesn't output BIOS POST codes at startup. So it cannot be used with parallel port diagnostic cards.
Other: If your PC does not have a parallel port, or you need an extra one, this is the thing to get!

Pros: - cheap. all the shops i look at sells this at double the price.
- good for pc that doesn't come with any parallel port.
- works 100% with my CNC program (mach 3)
- very good, no complains actually
Cons: - there's no instructions/ model number inside the box.
- Driver CD doesn't state which driver to use.(later found out this is the MCS9805 chipset)
- no warranty? Nevermind actually because it so cheap.
- does not use the traditional port address (0x378) so you must set your program carefully.
Other: good value for money.
this is the one to get if you need a parallel card to connect to your CNC program (mach 3)
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: Very good card, it is not a fake parallel port, it is an actual parallel port.
It works as it is supposed to.
I bought it to get some digital outputs out from my computer, and so I did, and it works really good.
It is easy to install the card and the driver.
Cons: The CD that came with it did not work, the driver is not in it or at least I was not able to find it, but here in some other review there is the URL where yoy can get the driver, or otherwise, you look at the chip the card has on it, and then look in google for a web with the name and in the web you look for the correct driver according to the number :D
It does not get the 378h IO Address, it get another one, but it is easy to know wich one, just look in the device administrator, the moschip parallel port.
Mine is at AF00 - AF07.
Printers/scanners should work ok with this card, and if you want to program it with something like visual basic and the inpout32.dll library, you can but instead of usin
Out &H0378, 0
You should use
Out &HAF00, 0
or whatever IO address the card is set to :D
Other: I am using it for doing a DIY ambilight system in my computer :D
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: It just works! I have tested it with a lcd character display and works as expected. That means that is a real port and not just for printers like the usb-parallel converters.
Cons: No cons really, the price could be a little better but still it worths it if you need it.
Other: Need it? Take it!
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: Really simple to install, just shutdown your computer, plug in the card and start your computer.
Drivers are automatically installed on just about all operating systems (Windows XP, Vista, 7, Linux).
Really usefull when you are trying to program a ARM development board with only a parallel connection
Cons: None really, it just works.
Other: Great card, easy to install. If you need it without a hurry this is a way better option than buying it at your local computer store. Really a plug and play solution on every single system.
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: I've bought it to programming AVR microcontrollers. I've tried it under linux (ubuntu x64), using "5-wired" easy-to-make homemade AVR-programmer with buffer 74hc244n. Everything works great! I've programmed it using Ponyprog2000 program and avrdude console programmer. Both works ok (using STK200 mode).
Cons: I've used AVR Atmega-16
Other: Great to fast start programming 8-bit AVR, but should be cheaper because it is simple device.
