  • Inexpensive tester for the casual cable maker

posted by gangals on 21:00:51 G6T 06/06/2007 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Takes a standard 9 Volt battery and has an easy to read pin layout. The remote unit is nice for already installed cable. The included case is quite durable.

Cons: Not the most durable in the world so I wouldn't recommend it for everyday use, but great for the casual cable maker.

Other: Inexpensive little tester with remote unit that's can detect "broken pins".

Pros: - Easy to use - Supports both RJ45 and RJ11 - Included pouch protects unit when not in use

Cons: - On/Off switch is a little flimsy - Not very durable but would be perfect for the occasional cable maker

Other: A must-have item in any system administrators toolbox!

  • A Great Little Tool if you make you own cables!

posted by danielbriggs on 16:00:09 G12T 07/12/2007 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: A good little device, which enables you to check if you've crimped the connectors on correctly on your Cat5e cables. This way, you can be sure that they should work when you connect them. When you switch it on, it runs through each of the pins in sequence, 1-8, so you can tell if they are mis-aligned. You can detach one end of the tester to check cables far apart.

Cons: Without the battery in, it feels a bit cheap, but after the 9V batt. is added, it gives it more 'weight'.

At first the rj45 ports are very stubborn, and the cable got stuck once of twice, but they are ok after they bed in.

Other: A must have for all those network cable makers out there! And you can't argue at the price.

  • A must have tool for non profesional use

posted by TonyAL on 04:22:57 G3T 09/03/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: -Includes both RJ11 and RJ45 testers. -Very small, it fits easily everywhere. -Seems well built. -Only one battery required.

Cons: -I use it for every now and then testing, and its OK, but seems like it cannot be used by professionals for hundreds of times of use.
-Green is not the right color for me, but it doesn't matter so much.

Other: Very useful for people like me that are not network integrator, but are always using networks at home or at work, and occasionally need to test both telephonic and LAN.
    And for this price ...

  • GREAT WORKING

posted by dnalorhendriks on 06:29:48 G3T 12/03/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: great each cable has it's own led light. you can split it up..sender and reciever reciever doesn't need power

Cons: rj45 plug-in is very VERY tight when i wanted to get my cable out.
    the silver outside came loose.

Other: for home use it's GREAT..
for profesional it's i think not so good, because of it's construction.
great for the price cheaper then at home.
so when you are installing an LAN-network or telephone network this you can use.

  • Very Professional Tool at a good price

posted by darksideme on 17:08:47 G5T 03/05/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Great tester. Easy to understand and use. Each cable tiny individual cable has it's own led light. Sender and Receiver can be at a pretty good distance.

Cons: On/Off switch is a bit poorly made. Would have wanted a push button but it's cheep so i got it.
RJ45 ports are very tight at first and the cable got stuck a bit.
It skips through the cable fast and i wished that cables that didn't match would light up red it my only major issue with it.

Other: It's a must have as a practice tool and not used for long term on the job tool.

Pros: -Fast and wireless, you can split the product and test the two ends
-9 volts battery ( good and durable)
    -easy to use
    -good bag
    -very small

Cons: -The on/off switch is not strong enough, you need to be careful to change.
-Battery place is bigger than the battery, too much empty space.

Other: Very useful for using networks at home or at work. It is not a professional tool but do the job very well.

  • Good tester with good price

posted by JrBenito on 09:42:24 G5T 29/05/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Light weight and small, it uses one 9V battery and it has a good life time. Its carry bag is simple but nice and protect the equipment during store or transport. It is able to test RJ45 and RJ12 (maybe RJ11 too, I did not try it yet).

Cons: The leds are a bit weak (nothing too bad but could be better) and the power switch is not strong enough and since it has two "on" states, is difficult to change from off to on (there are two on states, slow and fast), I mean, it is difficult to set slow state since power switch goes to fast directly.
The RJ female connectors are tight. The male connector goes in easy but to pull it out it needs strong.

Other: Here in my country a similar test set costs more than three times this price. This was a good deal.

  • This is CHEAP and also a great product

posted by _GGG_ on 15:46:06 G6T 10/06/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: I was surprised by this little tool. Expected to receive a piece of crap at this price but the tool works great. Does the same job as the (much much) more expensive one i used to have at my previous job.
The carryingcase is nice, keeps it from getting scratched in your toolbox.

Cons: Although the buildquality is ok, the on/off switch is a bit soso.
Sometimes it can be hard to get the RJ45 plug from the socket. Do not pull too hard tho, be gentle and it will come out.

Other: Buy this, works like a charm.

  • Handy tool, Build quality is ok, Works as expected

posted by nathanreed on 03:36:35 G6T 12/06/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Works perfecly, has the ability to relocate the remote sensor to another location. Easy to ready results.

Cons: Build quality is average, the case has that smell to it. The on/off switch can be a little annoying but overall a good product. The connectors can get stuck sometimes, so just becareful when removing them.

Other: Highly recommend for the hobbist, to debug network connectivity problems - rulling out bad cables/connections
