  • My favorite DX knife yet

    posted by m80matt on 13:20:48 G1T 01/01/2010 certificated customer

Pros: This knife is fantastic. I've order at least a half dozen knives from DX and this is by far the most solid knife I've received yet. Opening the blade is easy (but not too easy) and very smooth. The locking / unlocking mechanism is easy to operate and I prefer it over the more common liner-lock. The blade is thick, and came nice and sharp

Cons: I have small hands and this is a rather large knife. The blade itself isn't that much longer than a lot of other knives but it's wider and so the whole knife just ends up being bigger. It's too big for my pockets for every day carry.

Other: Out of the knifes I've purchased (18266, 30887, 01757, 09199, 05861) this one is my favorite.

  • Not quite perfect, but...

Pros: Extremely sturdy and generally very well-made knife. Blade is quite thick and the whole knife is heavy but well-balanced. Arrived pretty sharp and seems to be holding an edge very well. Feels good in the hand. Opening, closing and locking actions are very good. Locks shut as well as open. Can be swung open one-handed with a little practice. It's not perfect (see below) but for the price I am amazed how good it is.

Cons: Hex screws were not all as tight as they should be. A bit of Loctite or superglue might be an idea. Belt Clip was too hard and not springy enough, but I removed it easily enough.

Other: Just feels amazingly well-engineered overall. And for the price it's a steal. This one's going to be in my toolbox for a long time.

  • Nice big knife

Pros: I bought this knife, i like the visage. I was surprise of this staff. Nice big sharp knive, fit the hand. (23 cm full lenght. 10,3 only blade) Not heavy. Very good blade surface finish. Very good build quality but..

Cons: Build quality is very good but i find some little defect in manufacture, probably incurred during drilling - the colour was little bit scratch around the holes.

Other: I think, its very good knive vor this price. I bought 5-6 knives from deal extreme, and this one is one of the best. At DX are quality knives (not so high quality like in special manufactures, bud i mean very usable knives) but price bears quality. Knives under 10 dollars are not very good, the manufacturers quality are more chinese. I bought few knives under 10 dollars, and was not very satisfied.

  • Great Knife!!!

Pros: This is the best knife i own from DX its fairly long (23cm) and has a nice weight and feel to it. The locking mechanism is something to get used to but after opening and closing a few times its getting easy No blade wobble, fairly sharp. Build quility is truly great I'm sure that 99% off all people won't see its a counterfeit. BUY ONE for every pocket you got.

Cons: Not much off a con..... but i really miss the (snap) when opening this knife, this is because of the locking mechanism that is different from liner lock knife's

Other: GREAT Knife!!!!!, this is the one to get people.

Pros: A big single handle opening blade. built quality and finish is very good. Razor sharp right out of the box. Good large grip and thick blade. Weight is good and balanced feel. The lock system is good and sturdy. Finish on the blade is of good quality.

Cons: none yet. mine was opened by my country customs due to size and was packed back neatly.

Other: worth the money, collectors and daily use.

  • not so sure about the lock

    posted by knifeedge2K1 on 10:33:02 G6T 15/06/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Sharp out of box, only needed a little tuning

Cons: Lock doesn't seem to engage fully on mine ...and if the pictures are any indication on every other knife as well.

Other: Just got this knife after ordering it last week. Pretty much exactly as I expected, just a tiny bit of play when open with no noticeable wobble ... atleast on mine.
The lock doesn't seem to engage all the way when open, gonna contact DX about that, not sure if it's a problem with just my knife or all of them as the pictures show the lock not fully engaged when open either. On mine the "switch" that comes down to block the blade from folding back doesn't go completely forward when the knife opens but does when it is closed. Thus when open only about half of the switch is there to hold the knife blade back. I guess one could take the entire knife apart and either grind the blade or file the "switch" to let it ride forward a little more while the knife is open but you could so easily screw this job up that it isn't worth it.
Gonna update this once I get word from DX whether this is systemic or isolated incident.

  • Solid heavy worker

    posted by NH4NO3 on 01:25:32 G8T 11/08/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

    Pros: Aluminium handle, good grip
4+ mm thick, 100 mm long heavy blade
No blade play, lock is perfect
Easy open/close with one hand, either left or right, can be quick opened with wrist jerk.

Cons: No toothing or prop for first finger either on handle or base of blade. Not a big problem, cause handle has good grip and long enough.
Sharpening angle maybe too big. But it's ok for survival knife.
No hole for lanyard. Have to drill.

Other: Seems, this one will be my permanent fellow traveller for long and far. Feels like little axe in the hand. Good buy.

  • Great knife with a good lock mechanism

    posted by rae76 on 11:54:03 G10T 15/10/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: -Big heavy and solid compared to most of the knives sold here.
-Blade shape is a nice long spear point, shaving sharp out of the box.
-Blade is thick; 1.3x to 1.5x thickness of my other similarly length blades.
    -Lock is ambidextrous.
-No blade wobble at all when opened
-Handle is aluminum with steel liner.
-Blade pivot is lined with plastic or teflon washers on both sides. Combined with the lock mechanism makes opening and closing the blade smooth and without hesitation.
-Due to locking mechanism blade sits centered when closed; compared to liner locked knives which the blade will slant opposite the side of the liner lock.
-Lock has the "just nice" feel, some locks have too much travel making closing the knife a hassle while too little travel makes lock feel unsafe.
-Handle design is an open back which means debris should fall out the back.

Cons: -pocket clip is NOT reversible, meaning you cannot mount it on the other side, it has 3 holes on the opposite side but they are just cosmetic and do not align to the pocket clip.
-Lock will allow the blade to close a bit under extreme pressure, it is unknown if its the inherent flaw of all such locking mechanism but for this particular knife the lock will disengage a bit. It does LOCK positively as I've tried knocking the back of the blade on a table hard and it stays lock, just that when you hold the handle and force the blade it will move as if disengaging the lock for a bit(a teeneeweenee bit) before stopping and once pressure is off the back of the blade it springs back to full open position.
-No jimping at the back of the blade.
-1 screw came not tightened, but most DX knives are such so its highly recommended that each screw is removed and applied locktite to them then screw them back tight.
-Lock spring is quite strong making unlocking a little harder than need be, and due to the lock design the same applies to opening the knife, so if you're looking at a fast deploying knife this is NOT it. Even sideways flicking the knife does not always fully deploy the knife.
-Locking mechanism makes full dis- assembly of this knife very difficult. Adding locktite to the screws or tightening the pivot screw is fine just not dis-assemble to it component parts.

Other: For the price this is no doubt a great knife, one of the best from DX.
Feels like a kick back kind of knife rather than than one made for action, not fast deploying but opens and closes tight, and reliably time after time.

  • Very sturdy knife

Pros: I must say I'm really satisfied with this knife - it's strong, the blade is really thick and strong as well, and I'm a fan of Axis locks now. The blade is some type of carbon steel, it's not stainless steel. The coating is holding up well, so far. While the knife was disassembled, I've noticed the build quality is really great. Lubed all moving parts with a light coating of teflon grease and it's unbelievable how smooth the opening/closing is. I can easily open the knife with just a flick of my wrist, it snaps locked in the open position with a positive and nice click. I can also easily open the knife in a reverse grip, with a particular flick of the wrist. It can also be easily closed this way, as well.

Cons: I've noticed my pocket clip became loose. I thought it was the screws that came loose, however when I tried to tighten them, I've found that the threads on the knife are screwed, literally. Dunno how it happened. Anyway I love this knife so much, I carry it with me all the time. So I decided to the repair the clip and fix it to the handle, permanently. I've disassembled the knife, put some cold-weld (putty type) on the back of the clip and on the screws' threads, then put the clip on the knife and clamped it to the handle in a vise (with soft aluminum jaws, so no scratches). This was a success - the clip is now firmly attached (in the same position as it was before), with absolutely no play and no chance of it's screws becoming loose.

Other: This is quite a big knife, with over 10cm blade length. The blade is thick and strong. The knife weighs 200g - a big boy! I carry it every day but I suppose it might be too big for some people to use it for edc.
