Pros: pros looks goodvery very bright

Cons: okay rechargable a a wont fit into it well they will but no fun trying to get them out , and the trustfire 14500 only just go in

Other: the strobe on this is almost a weapon its crazy fast you may think its a bonus .its good only having the three modes the memory works its a bit slow about 4 seconds clip is good finish is great this is the first torch that i will not be bothering taking apart so all in all its not perfect but omg its bright for sich a small torch i have made my own 14500 r5 bye filling down a p6 type drop in r 5 but this is much better

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

    Pros: Lots of little extras:
    -glow o-ring inside reflector/tailcap.
    -metal reflector/pill is removable
    -clip is removable
-clicky is removable (from inside )
    -removable from pill (screws)
-smooth transition from spot to flood (no donuts)

Cons: - on AA the high and low are the same intensity
(Unable to confirm a difference with 14500)
-a larger than other AA lights
    -reverse clicky switch
-very slight blue tint to the LED

Other: Nice light, slightly overpriced, but worth the changes that can be easily done later to the light.

Pros: Small and compact, yet quite bright, especially on a 14500. Very nice looking - even better than in the pictures. Feels and looks like a quality build.

Cons: Centre spot in light isn't as smooth as I would have expected. There seems to be some darks spots in it. On a 14500 battery, the light gets very hot very quickly.

Other: Buy it. You'll like it. You may need to wear some heat resistant gloves if you plan on holding it for longer than 4 or 5 minutes.

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: - Works on AA and 14500
    - Uses a Cree XP-G (can't say if it's really R5, but it comes pretty close to my other R5 Light (sku.32954 driven by 2x18650) when using a 14500)
    - Overall Build Quality is ok
    - Mode Memory works, the light needs to be switched off for like 3-4s though
    - Has a useful clip and a GITD-Tailbutton

Cons: - The build quality of the Tailswitch is really cheap crap
    - when driven by an AA, there is nearly no difference between the two modes
    - useless Strobe-Mode. Hi-Mid-Low would be better
    - The Light kept switching from High to Low and/or from Strobe to High by itself. It seems to be the fault of the switch though, didn't do that when i just bridged it. It seems to be gone now, after i dis- and reassambled and cleaned the switch.
    - Produces really high annoying noises

Other: Overall, a really nice light for the price.

  • R5-A3 XPG 1xAA torch

posted by okwchin on 23:05:39 G6T 23/06/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This torch is built to a decent quality. Threads are ok, the fit of the parts are generally good.
This is a more expensive than the usual $10 torches, but is one of the ways of getting a XP-G led emitter (not XP-E as advertised). This led in combination with the smooth alum reflector is able to make a decently ring-less spill. The focal area is larger, with a oval halo effect from lens configuration. Good for short range usage.
Brightness is up there for an AA torch. Ive only used it with AA NiMH batteries and its already quite impressive, same brightness as my 2x CR123A torch.
3 mode memory functions very well on this torch. 3 modes
    - 1. High - Full brightness, on 1.2V draws 1.2A
    - 2. Med.High - almost indistinguishable on NiMH batteries.
    1.2v draws 0.8A
    - 3. Strobe - A decent strobe that definitely can attract attention/annoy people. - 1.2V 0.7A
The memory function is very good, with a minimum waiting period of 1.5-2 seconds. Very useful memory timing period.

Cons: The anodizing is even, but not the hardest around. The clip is already wearing it down after a month of use.
The beam pattern is good for closer use, but not that great for long distance becasue of the larger focal area, and corresponding reduction in brightness.
The tail clicky is harder to use becasue of several factors. The torchlight has a recessed button, the recess area is deeper, but on a smaller body this makes it harder for larger fingers. The actual switch is also deeper, needing you to press the rubber even further to activate the switch. The firm switch does however prevent accidental activation, but i feel its too hard for my liking.
The 3 mode is a great idea, with no useless random strobes. However the "low" brightness is still soo bright, its practically still a 1 mode torch. NEEDS a low that is ACTUALLY low.
Becsaue of this, you can only expect to get at best 2-3 hours from this torch on "low*. 1.5-2 hours on high.

Other: Still find the torch an impressive device. Friends are more impressed by the small torch than a larger one that produces marginally more light (ignoring battery life of course). I like the looks with the simpler shape.
I ordered mine within the first batch of torches. With what we've seen with DX, *specifications may change*.
I say give it a go

  • A lot of light in a small package

posted by clanrat on 12:15:53 G7T 26/07/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Nice build quality. Fit and finish is good. Anodizing has no noticeable flaws. Machining is decent and the threads engage reasonably well.
Brightness on high is good, and the strobe is also very good.
I like the flush button on this one - allows tailstanding - and the amount of force required to turn the light on. This one's not going to come on by accident.

Cons: The pocket clip is wire and feels a bit flimsy.
'strike crown' is aluminium and won't stand to up much abuse. This light is too small to use as an effective strike tool anyway.
Almost no apparent brightness difference between high and low. Not going to be useful for reading things at night.

Other: Lots of light in a small package. Very pocket friendly.

Pros: 3 modes simple to use Bright max mode Small and light weight Adonizing is really good quality

Cons: The clip looks cheap, not really strong No hole for lace

Other: If you are looking for a little emergency light (for car, or camping) to no use it on a very long time, take it for the price you'll have a really amazing light.

  • BEST on today AA XP-G R5 torch

posted by mrBIOS on 00:51:04 G9T 16/09/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Nicely made! reflector o-ring is glowing greenly in the dark after use. so does clicky button but it needs to be "recharged" by another torch. not so bright as supposed. nice idea with half-clicking mode changing but too sensitive - after off torch will run in next state. fits all my batteries and rechargebles.

Cons: here is no cons except short hi-brightness life. it lasts about 3-5 minutes.

Other: no way - must buy for those who needs cheap AA torch with latest generation LED.

Pros: Very pleased woth this light. Perfect for the shirt pocket at work. Workmanship seems good. Threads smooth. I really liked the throw patern of the light. It seems to be more of an area light. Other might be suited better for a longer throw, but for a small light distance is not my objective.

Cons: I wish the memory function would bring the light back on in the position it weas turned off in. As is the light has to be left off for an extended period of time of rhtis to work.

Other: Good light, Nice even throw.

  • The only R5 AA on DX

    posted by Darkblade48 on 02:16:32 G1T 29/01/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: A decent flashlight. Uses the newer R5 Cree LEDs. It is a three mode (high, low, high strobe) flashlight. The memory function works well, and is quite simple to use. It comes with a built in clip which can be useful for clipping to pockets, bags, shirt pockets, etc. The push button and O-rings are glow in the dark. Finally, the threading came pre-lubricated.

Cons: The price is a little high. While it is the only AA/14500 flashlight on DX (as of the writing of this) that uses the R5 Cree LED, it is hard to justify the increase in cost. On low and strobe mode, the flashlight buzzes enough that it is audible if the flashlight is held to the ear.

Other: Not a bad flashlight, it being the first R5 LED AA/14500 flashlight on DealExtreme. A slightly lower price would be more attractive, but in the meantime, a good everyday carry flashlight.
