  • Bight at first then dims

posted by MiniSniper on 09:09:40 G4T 09/04/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: The threads are decent and the anodizing is good. The reflector and glass are clean.

Cons: While the light is bright at first it quickly dims. I thought this was just a bad light so dx sent me another one and it had the same problem. I took out the led and found the problem. To keep the led base from shorting out to the light housing they stuck a piece of plastic between the led and pill and this does not allow the heat to dissipate and thus the led dims because of over heating. I took both lights apart and used some thermal tape to Isolate the led and it is much better now. The piece of plastic looks different in both lights and it look like a piece cut out from a isolater that fits between the led and reflector to keep it from shorting out.

Other: I don't suggest anyone buy this unless you plan on modding it.

Pros: Very bright (too bright to perserve night vision) Nice color tone (red- not orange). Nice wrist strap. Glass lens. Clean (my last batch were very dirty and had to be taken apart to clean the lens)

Cons: Not sure what to use it for- maybe walking at night- or just to show off- Beam artifacts are bad (as it seems to be with all colored LEDs)

Other: If you want a good Astronomy light look elsewhere- these are too bright in my opion.

  • Great P60 Host, very bright red module

posted by thefezman on 18:32:07 G2T 02/02/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Very cheap P60 host, I've tried multiple modules in it with no problems. Fits with 2 x protected 16340 or 1 x protected 18650 just fine. Great for having a spare P60 host. I've tried with white LEDs, infrared, UV, and a xenon bulb, all work just fine.

Cons: Host doesn't have the greatest build quality, but still makes a good general P60 host.

Other: it's cheap, it's a P60 host, and it's not too bad looking. Buy it!

  • Good light, great value

posted by lowrider on 12:17:45 G4T 27/04/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Pretty bright with no visible artifacts (which a lot of the non-white K2s seem to suffer from in my experience). Build quality is good, except for a few minor scratches on the body and some imperfections in the OP reflector (oh well). Came well lubricated. Solid P60 host which makes this really good value in my book.

    Cons: Slightly protruding clicky.

Other: Unless you need a cheap P60 host, this will be a bit of a novelty light for most people. At less than $10, it's hard to find anything wrong with this light.

  • Cheap way to buy a 501 host

posted by srinity on 17:41:26 G6T 02/06/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This is a cheap way to buy a 501 host if you are looking for one.

Cons: The red K2 isn't all that bright. While I love Lumiled's products, the DX Cree flashlights are all brighter.

Other: Really cheap way to get a 501 host. The red module is useful if you want red, but there are better red modules.

  • BRIGHT RED

posted by ledsanders on 06:52:03 G6T 14/06/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This light is very well made for under $10 USD.
Its a great host for all the drop-in modules DX carries.
The Red K2 LED is very bright! good enough to walk the dog at midnight.

Cons: When your batteries get low you get two artifacts in the beam but its not enough to take a star away from the rating.
Could be too bright to maintain your vision at night depending on your surroundings.
When shining on the side of my white truck its almost blinding.
Avoid shining onto white objects if you don't want to be seeing spots before your eyes.

Other: DX never seems to amaze me with their Extreme Deals. If you are looking for a well made, but cheap host this WF-501 is it.
You can get this light in blue, green, red, & White. so if your replacing the drop-in like I am get a color you like.

  • Awesome flashlight

posted by DMolas on 13:41:36 G9T 26/09/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: I was surprised when i out my hands on this flashlight. The overall quality of this light is outstanding. The body is made of metal and feels really strong, the light bulb as well as the reflector material arround are really good. It has a very strong red light really amazing for this price you cant get any better. Even the clicky is well made.

Cons: I cant see any cons at all maybe the string isnt all that strong but thats nothing really...

Other: 100% satisfyed if you want a good red flashlight buy this one.

  • Really Red

posted by hazaranz on 16:18:39 G10T 12/10/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Nice & Bright RED, mine definitely takes protected 18650 and cr123a's.
Is quite a flooder, but still shows up animals eyes @ 50 metres, but you have to have the torch near your eye level to really get eyeshine.

Cons: Gets warm and loses brightness within 1 minute. Sometimes turning the head is needed to get light to go.
Wish it was more of a thrower, I have since added a smooth reflector & aspherical lens and It's good for outlining cats/rabbits @ 50 metres but still gets hot.

Other: It's not a spotlight, but still a good torch to add to the collection.

Pros: 1. Its single mode. 2. Aluminum reflector. 3. Glass lens. 4. Orings in the correct places. 5. Very bright red K2 Led

Cons: 1. Not well built as other WF-501B here. 2. Arrived dirty and with led mis-aligned 3. There was no thermal paste under led star.

Other: A must buy. Very good price, almost unbeatable. It's my second one!

  • nice small red led light

posted by BOGIEBOLL on 23:13:11 G3T 12/03/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This is a well built light, handles nicely, functions well, works as described. The red is very red and it is hard to find RED led lights.

Cons: This is not as bright or not as much as a thrower as I had hoped. I would guestimate this to be around 40 lumens? GIve or take, it is no where near the 90 lumen drop in for sale on Deal Extreme. I was hoping it was brighter, but better than the terra lux red bulbs for the mini mag light.

Other: This light is usable for eye scanning to about 40 yards effectively. For the money buy it, especially if you need a diimer flooder torch.
