  • Great light at a very good price

posted by Brlux on 15:13:15 G10T 19/10/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This is a great light for the price. The build quality of my item is excellent with good machining and finish. The reflector is great and it has a glass lense. The threads are smoth and well cut.
The R2 led module is very bright and is safe to use with unprotected 18650. It gradually dims as the 18650 is depleted and it is barely putting out any light around 2.7V so it will not over discharge your 18650 Cell. I also ordered a 10W 3.7V Xenon bulb sku 3246 and it easily drops in and is very bright. The Xenon bulb could over discharge an unprotected 18650 cell.

Cons: The Led lamp will not reach full power 1000mA when runing on 1 x 18650 it is closer to 600mA with a fully charged cell and is not very well regulated. It does seem to achieve full power on 2 x 123 cells.
The SOS mode is actually SOSOSOSOSOSOSOS.
The dimming is acomplished by a low frequency PWM about 100Hz so it is very noticeable to me. I am personally annoyed by any PWM frequency below 1KHz.

Other: The build quality of the housing is very good and the R2 LED module is very nice and functional. The ability to drop in a Xenon bulb sku 3246 and have an 18650 powered Surefire clone is very nice. I liked it so much I ordered another one and will probably order more.

  • Great Moded Light

posted by csshih on 19:09:34 G11T 05/11/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: - Very cheap for a R2 light
    - Has 5 modes
    - Memory for the 5 modes
    - supports cr123a/18650
    - Clip is well placed(Clip is attached with 2 "+" screws
    - Threads came lubed
    - cleanly imprinted logo
    - Bright!

Cons: - Threads feel slightly weird, they're not big enough?
    - Smooth button, not textured, though this may be opinion
    - Switch is weak, will probably break soon
    - No lanyard

Other: Overall, this is a great light, and I would recommend it to most people that like flashlights, due to the 5 mode, it's a pretty nice P60 Host

  • Cheap bright light

posted by quarx on 01:48:39 G1T 03/01/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

    Pros: -cheap
-memory is functional as compared to my other lights.
    -bright with 2 123s
-good runtime with 18640, a bit brighter compared to N3 with 18640.
-fast strobe is blinding, i like it better compared to C3s slow strobe

Cons: -rubber tail switch cap feels cheap
    -switch feels cheap too.
-scratches are appearing after some use.
-runtime is not so good with r123s

Other: cheap dependable light, just carry extra set of batteries to beat r123s short runtime.

  • Powerful Light for Great Price

    posted by the22ice on 14:50:31 G2T 23/02/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: +This light is very bright.
+The hot spot is quite tight, throws well.
+Bright enough spill to be acceptable in closer quarters, but seems to be more suited for larger distances.
    +Easy to switch through modes.
    +Mode memory works great.
+Even on low the light is very useful.
+Very easy to open head to swap modules.

Cons: -Threads a little dirty, had to clean & oil.
-2x protected cells (sku. 8683) Damaged my module by over-tightening. :(
-"SOS" (SOSOSO) and strobe mostly useless.

Other: Awesome light, very pleased. Good if you want a small powerful flashlight for relatively cheap and are not too concerned about run time.

  • One of the greats!

posted by sparktastic on 23:50:42 G3T 27/03/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This light has fantastic throw for a 25mm reflector. The drop-in is only mildly OP, which means a reasonably tight hotspot & great throw, with just the right amount of spill for close up work. High, medium and low modes are great, the memory function works as it should. If you turn if off on high mode, the next time you switch it on, it comes on in high mode. The R2 LED is a very cool, slightly blue white. Great spring steel clip A+. Nice annodizing.

Cons: Useless strobe and SOS modes as usual. Although, I would have to say that the SOS mode is even more useless than normal, since it actually sends SO SO SO! Hmmm, If you were stranded somewhere and you used this flashlight to signal for help, your potential rescuers, assuming they could read morse code in the first place, would go 'So what?'. Doesn't tailstand.

Other: Great value light. Option for future LED/Pill/Driver/Module upgrades. Practical size. One of my favourites so far.. Keep em coming..

  • Bang for the Buck

    posted by dannyc on 00:39:44 G6T 14/06/2009

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This is definitely a thrower - light is somewhat narrow, enabling it to throw further, but also useable up close. Machining quality is top notch. Clip is pretty sturdy. Pure white light from the R2.

Cons: The clicky tailswitch rattles. Build quality on the switch is somewhat flimsy. The rubber coating on the switch is also flimsy. There are bits and pieces probably left from the machining, found in the module itself which could cause a short.

Other: For me, this is the best bang for the buck flashlight from DX. I intend to purchase more and highly recommend this.

  • Best value in a mid-sized flashlight

posted by caerlon on 17:40:39 G7T 09/07/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: -This is probably the best value you'll find in a mid-sized, standard duty flashlight.
-Compared to a Fenix TK10 (similar light) which costs nearly 5x as much, it is brighter, and offers more functionality by way of the 5-mode switch (see cons).
-Looks good, well-made, waterproof, decent matte anodizing (but not Type-III).
-Functional clip which is also recessed slightly into the body so that it does not interfere with grip.
-fits 18650 sku.5790, or two CR123A rechargeables or primaries.
-R2 P60 drop-in module is worth $10 on its own, so you are only paying around $6 for a P60 host that is pretty nice.
-R2 LED is quite noticeably brighter than my Fenix TK10 (Q5), also slightly cooler tint and sharper focus.
-waterproof (replace/tighten tailcap and check and make sure all the O-Rings are there first -- two 20mm O-Rings on the barrel and two 26mm O-rings in the head).

Cons: -mushy amorphous black tailcap... i highly recommend you replace this with a new one. any of the 14mm tailcaps will fit - i replaced mine with a 14mm GITD one (sku.05714). the replacement caps need to be turned inside out and about 1.5mm of the rubber post on the inside needs to be trimmed off for proper function.
-when i received mine, the driver had actually come loose on the inside of the P60 module, and had to be soldered back on or the light did not work properly. this only took a couple minutes, and is probably very unlikely to happen on other lights but i thought id mention it. i am sure if i had complained with attached photos DX would have replaced it, but it was easier for me to just fix it myself.
-threads needed lubing. get some dialectric grease and get in the habit of lightly lubing your flashlight threads and O-rings for better function and longer life.
-i dont like the plastic threaded ring that retains the tailcap switch - its extremely soft and the only weak point of the flashlight design.
-this is not a heavy duty flashlight. i would think nothing of dropping an overbuilt flashlight like a Fenix TK10 off a roof and aside from some scuffs and dings it would function fine. this one? i am sure it would easily survive every day home, office and garden use but if you are using this in the line of duty, construction, or remote camping then i would get a heavy duty light instead. if you are on a budget, the WF-503B looks more rugged, otherwise get a Fenix.

    Other: get it.
i ordered one, then immediately ordered another as a gift. this is much better than sku.16240 (WF-501B) - design is nicer, has a belt clip, better (matte) anodizing and better machining.

  • The devil mode me do it

posted by purplepunisher on 02:36:55 G7T 13/07/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: The light can give off a good amount of light. 3 of the modes are nice,I like being able to extend battery life.I am having no overheating issues (did a foil wrap around the pill).

Cons: Mine is hard to turn on. I feel sure it is an issue with the modes. I have to fully push in and hold in the switch for 1 or 2 seconds before I release it back out. Otherwise the ligh't wont turn on....No light!

Other: When I use the extra care to get it to turn on ,then I am happy and liking it. Now I am using 18650 batteries.

  • (One of) my favorite(s)

posted by PedroExtreme on 13:35:35 G7T 25/07/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

    Pros: - Very bright light;
    - Just the right size, not too big and certainly not too small;
    - Can take one 18650 or two CR123 batteries;
    - Easy mod-able with the smooth drop-in reflector (SKU 5937);
    - Good high, medium and low modes;

Cons: Could do without with the totally useless SOS-mode (or rather SO SO SO mode)
    - Threads a little dirty, but no big deal

Other: A hell of a flashlight, when modded with the reflector SKU 5937 it give a super throw (but the beam is a little "ugly", some cree rings visible.

  • decent little unit

posted by prosper on 00:16:30 G2T 02/02/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: -> pretty decent throw, with usable flood -> the dim modes are actually dim, giving usable bright, medium and low mode. Should last for ever on low. -> mode memory -> 'SOS' is actually SOS (instead of SO SO SO SO)

Cons: -> Like any P-60, thermal conductivity from the module to the body is poor -> the clip is soft steel, not springy -> the screw holes for the clip go all the way thru the body of the light -> The screws for the clip are mis-aligned, so the clip is crooked -> Strobe modes are useless

Other: Decent R2 unit, but there are better ones available on DX for similar $$$ (see the 504B, for example)
