  • Excellent

Pros: -Very useable beam. Much more so than my MTE SSC P7.
-Great spill...excellent hot spot for decent throw.

    Cons: -None yet

Other: Bottom line...get it. The R5 LED is the single most impressive emitter that I've owned. More impressive than the P7 IMO b/c it's a fraction of the size and puts out only "slightly" less actual light.

  • Excellent value, bright and lightweight

Pros: Extremely bright. Small form factor - no huge reflector to deal with & easily pocketable. Tight beam, good throw. Very white light.

Cons: None so far. Tight beam might limit use as a bike light, but everything is a compromise - good throw means relatively poor flood and vice versa. Hopefully lights with these emitters will drop below $20 someday soon.

Other: Outstanding value for a fairly compact bright light. My new favorite.

  • Great smallish flashlight

posted by legendofpedro on 10:47:00 G5T 22/05/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Good beam. The light is white and gives a good throw. The wrist strap is nice, feels fairly strong. Nice feel, fits well in your palm. Not too light, not too heavy. Good battery life from my 16340s. Probably 45 minutes on full power, but then there's another 30 minutes of usable brightness light.

Cons: Black clicky tail. Maybe you like that, but I prefer glow in the dark ones. 16340s rattle a tiny bit, even when screwed together tightly. Cutting and rolling a sheet of paper solved the problem for me.

Other: Great flashlight. One of my favourite; especially at this price!

  • Notch above an R2 emitter, and a good quality host

posted by Culverjoe on 22:26:34 G10T 01/10/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: *10-20% more light output than R2.
*larger spot, more of a "general use" beam
    *good threads and overall quality.
    *one mode: bright!
    *white light, not blue

Cons: *O-ring on tail cap is undersized and is probably not waterproof as appose to the head o-ring and lens o-ring
    *Plastic lens!
*less throw than an R2 (typical with a larger die surface area)

Other: we got rid of all our maglites on my farm and use these instead. seems to be one of the best values for an 18650 powered 3 watt LED on dealextreme.

  • Bright bright bright

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Brightest sub-$25 light I have found on DX. brighter than my SSC P7 drop in. decent thrower. my favorite light so far, best value I can find. much more simple with one mode (KISS.) I use it to shine on the deer and critters on my property, it has enough throw to see them up to 75m.

Cons: out of 3 one had the LED diode fall off inside the lens.. not sure how to fix it.. I am thinking its a fluke. thats it.

Other: get the one mode. the 5 mode is so annoying (P7 5 mode is ok, R5 version sucks).

  • High driver failure rate

posted by Culverjoe on 17:59:37 G12T 25/12/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Good flood Much brighter than R2 the spot is not very small, so it is a good work light, not blinding in one spot, and dull all around.

Cons: out of Six I have bought, two have completely failed (the drivers) and two more are extremely sensitive to batteries that aren't fully charged. The drivers cut out after the batteries get down to 3.25V. Will NOT buy anymore. also, the oring in the tail cap is undersized, and it is not water proof.

Other: after using six of these for three months, two completely died, and two flicker sometimes.

  • Bright - Maybe too bright?

posted by Guyfromhe on 11:46:16 G6T 27/06/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Extremely bright. You cannot look at the bulb or even a close reflection of it.
    Lights up a huge area.
    Nice aluminium casing, very sturdy.

    Cons: Takes weird batteries.
Only runs for about 30 minutes before requiring a charge.
Mine broke after a few weeks and was lighting up extremely dimly. I managed to fix it by repaired the spring connection to the base of the light so it's working again but build quality is quite low.

Other: Great little light, you might end up having to repair it and you should probably have a spare set of batteries around.

  • Very bright and practical

posted by DarthZeon on 05:41:24 G1T 22/01/2013 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: * Very bright * Bright center spot and good flood light around * Good for night cycling and running * Small and light, easy to put in pocket * Only one light mode * Very practical

Cons: * O-Ring in end cap is not waterproof, you need to grease it * Prone to flickering when battery gets low

Other: Very good and practical for the price. Had it for more than a year without any major problems. Recommended.
