Pros: great, works right out of the box , came with a driver cd that installed great and i have no issues with it.
the product is well assembled and does look like it would last for a long time
Cons: side screwes are useless as they tend to direct diagonal , but if you use it like me just for a few minutes at a time , it doesnt matter
Other: love it. i think its one of the best items at DX.
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: Worked the first time I plugged it in, didn't even need the CD for drivers. Tested all the way up to 9600 baud with a serial console, no issues.
Cons: Side screws are near enough to useless, I pulled them off and threw them out. Friction against the pins is just fine unless you're using it to support your weight. The USB extension cable included is about as low-grade as they come, but who cares? It's the adapter you want. I tossed mine into the pile of assorted bits I keep handy.
Other: Need a serial port? Got a USB port open? Click "buy this".

Pros: -It does what it has to doo. -Very convenient for people to connect routers, switches and servers using serial ports. -Once you had installed the correct drivers... you are ready to go.
Cons: -For Windows 7 64bit the drivers that came from the manufacturer and from windows suggestion don't work. Seem the installer locate them somewhere the windows can't reach on setup.
Other: Get the driver for windows 7 32/64 bit from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?4ij0gimzwuz

Pros: Tightly-molded, firm one. Works fine with my old graphic tablet in XP. Cable included is very useful because the thing is quite too large and heavy for PC's USB socket. Usual PL2303 chip inside - must work almost everywhere.
Cons: Bolts instead of nuts - cruel mistake of a manufacturer! Maybe You'll want to twist them out and change with parts of an old D socket. Or fix it forever with an adhesive like I did with my tablet. No separate *.inf driver on CD, just a Win installer.
Other: Good buy for serious needs.
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: + Driver CD is included + Works great on Windows 7 (32bit) + Extension cord + Product's body is very firm and durable.
Cons: - Can't use it without extension cord in my laptop, because the USB-connector in my product is slightly tilted. - Extesion cord is the cheapest extension cord i've ever seen
Other: Best Quality / Price ratio i've seen, does the job!

Pros: It is cheap and could be used to some electronic hobby project. Can be connected directly to 5V logic and also to 3.3V logic but additional changes are probably required to protect target circuit.
Cons: In accordance with the title this is not true USB to RS232 adapter, as the outputs voltage levels does not meet the criteria for RS232. These voltage levels should be ideally +12V/-12V or at least +3V/-3V for practical use. Still some devices can communicate.
Other: Ideal if you are looking for an USB to serial connection for your microcontroler project.

Pros: This is a simple USB <> RS232 converter. Not much to say here. It's the cheapest one available on DX an as others report it's PL2303 based which has wide driver support (now a days).
Cons: The PL2303 IC is actually a blob of epoxy (and a generic Maxim level converter) making it harder to to this adaptor for DIY USB <> TTL Serial. None the less, the epoxy blob shouldn't stop me as I will tap in on the level converter once I pass the module under the rework station.
Other: You get what you pay for, as at this low low price, what you get is a blob of black epoxy! ;)

Pros: The 3 I got have a Max 211 or a ADM211. These two ICs are RS232 line driver to meet the specifications of RS232. Levels are -10V to 10V. If you want to use it in a microcontroller project you have 2 possibilities to get it working: 1. use another level driver as the MAX232.
2. solder the max211 out. TX ist on the old PIN 6 and RX on Pin 19.
Cons: Some solderings are very bad. I solved this with a few more solder.
Now it has a level driver. So you have to remove it if you want to use it with a microcontroller.
I you want to remove the MAX211 be very careful. Its very easy to destroy the pads.
The PL2303 is glued.
Had a problem with the driver in Win xp.
Other: a good USB RS232 Converter but I´m not sure if it has a original pl2303 chip. Got a Code 10 Error in Win xp. Solved this with another driver.
New Version with level driver. So not so good for a microcontroller project.
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: I had no trouble using it with any Operating System.
Works in Ubuntu without any drivers, shows as a ttyUSB device.
To use in Debian or any similar Linux, you may need to add the standard modules usbserial and pl2303.
To use in XP or Vista, insert the supplied CD before plugging in for the first time.
Cons: There is absolutely no user guide.
The serial port is not officially RS232 because it only supports positive voltages. However any device built in the last 10 years should have no trouble with this variant of RS232.
The supplied USB extension cable is very lightweight and is unshielded. It does the job, but just barely.
Other: This is now my favourite way to connect my microcontroller projects to a PC. It is so cheap that I can put a USB port on every project just in case I might need it for debugging.
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: -great product, my pc doen't have a serial port, so this product is very usefull.
-great price. At a local store you pay 10 times as much.
-small size
-includes a usb extention cable
-includes driver cd
Cons: -not a very riggid contruction. In falls appart very easily.
-not true rs232, it only has positive levels.
-cable is not good in quality, but this doesn't matter.
-only rx and tx pins are connected
Other: Good enough product for most uses, but don't expect it to replace a real serial port.
