Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: good, its quite chunky, its very thick its 0.8cm wide and the length of the flint thingy, (i think its the flint), is nearly 4 cm, very good only a few tries and i got it to work, good solid build, wont snap anytime soon
Cons: could be a bit longer, the steel bit, would eveuntly go if u use it everyday for like a year it will break and wear away
Other: get it, its very good and will last you for ages
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: Good tool it works, makes sparks that can ignite small things like; steal wool soaked in methylated spirts, fire lighters, maybe even paper. Should last a while, I've been wasting it quite a bit, and seams like it'll last keep going past the novelty stage.
Cons: The Paint flakes away on the scraper, but it still works. Thumb hold is quite thick (could be thinner).
Other: What's to say, Buy it, very useful and Does the job and won't break the bank.
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: The firesteel part itself is about 8mm in diameter and has 40mm length. Thats more then enough length to draw necessary amount of sparks to light a fire.
Build is simple, jet sturdy, im not afraid of beaking it any time soon.
Works like it supposed to do, lighted fire with it in a matter of minutes.
Cons: None so far, i dont think there will be any in the future either.
Other: Buy few of them, for your house, car, boat or summerhouse, youll never know when youll need it.
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: Its cheap, I've seen these sell for up to $20 in sporting good stores. For the price you should buy a few and keep them in your vehicle just in case.
Cons: The striker "blade" comes covered in paint, the first few strikes don't produce a spark because the paint rubs off. They should have just skipped the paint altogether.
Other: One of the most reliable ways to start a fire.
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: Great sparks, got a papertowel smoking in 5 seconds. Solid built, recommended size, smaller would be difficult because you need some scratch distance to produce the mount of sparks needed to start a fire.
Cons: Took me 1 minute to figura out that I had to wear down the black paint before the sparks begun sparkling.
Have had it for 1 day; ok, I have used it (seriously) a lot, has already been worn down 2-3mm... (But this is a showof product)
Other: Highly recommended.

Pros: - very good sparks
- cheap
- nice looking
- in a survival shop you can easily pay 20 bucks for a thing like this.
Cons: - there is a protective layer on the magnesium. you must scratch it off before you can light something.
- the paint on the red block goes easily off from the plastics. after that it looks not well but it works still...
Other: scrath slowly till you have much splinters then light them, so you can light paper at once.
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: Got one just because it's cool thing to have. Lighting paper is easier than I thought. I hope I find this thing if I end up on deserted island.
Cons: Red color is getting off quite quickly. It stil sparks tho. ;) I can't imagine how it could ignite material that is not dry enough. I'm sure it would be impossible.
Other: Nice thingie to show your friends your survival skills. ;) Don't use it in nature on dry grass. Overall, nice tool to make a campfire. Summer is comming and with it grilling season it should be fun!

Pros: I bought this specific item after already buying various other versions from DealExtreme. All the types for sale here are excellent quality- especially when you consider the price. If you are on the fence about this firestarter let me reassure you: it works perfectly, lasts a long long time, is easy to use, and you will be satisfied.
Cons: None that I can see. Some people have commented that it is hard at first to get a spark, and hard to get a clean swipe with the striker. Remember that scratching it is the point; don't be gentle- it won't break just because you give it a little force. If you need to you can always add a longer rope between the two pieces. Also, only one side of the striker has teeth and that's the side you need to use.
Other: This same product sells at camping stores for around $20- why would you ever pay that much for a disposable produt?

Pros: The first and most important pro is its price. You can't beat it. Simple as that, if you wish to pay 15-20$ for "branded swedish firesteel", well... do the math how many of these you can buy for that price. works just the same with little practice it's the ultimate survival fire starter tool. It can throw nice glowing ember. Lightweight. CHEAP.
Cons: None. Well yeah the color of the handle, but you can always wrap it with duckt tape or electric tape, thus carying another usefull item in the wilderness.
Other: CHEAPER than dirt, literally. And works just as well as "brand name" fire steels.
Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)
Pros: - Unlike matches, works even when wet
- Unlike lighters, doesn't require (or run out of) fuel
- Could probably get hundreds of strikes before it wears out
Cons: - The rope it comes with is too short
- Requires very-ready-to-catch tinder; I could not light shredded paper using the sparks and instead had to switch to using a match after all
Other: - Useful if you think you will ever be in a survival situation, however will not always replace matches/lighter depending on your usage, e.g. lighting candles, portable gas stove
