Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: - You can get started with this module very fast; just apply power and it works immediately
    - Small size (13 x 27 mm)

Cons: - Too bad that it can't be used as master
    - Range is only ± 5 meters

Other: Perfect module for applications where you only need simple plug&play BT slave.

  • Nice module

posted by jiggajigga on 05:26:03 G8T 23/08/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: - Bluetooth 2.0 compatible, - CSR Chip can be reprogrammed, - Discrete ! - Fast to access. - LED connexion for debug, - Tolerant : I use it on a robot, which sustain vibrations, dirty, and rain.

Cons: - Very tiny, so you need patience and dexterity to solder it. - VCC voltage is 3.3V, so if you use a 5V power supply (like a USB port) you have to use a voltage regulator. - Not compatible with big fingers.

Other: Very usefull if you need it. This module is very cheap, so don’t wait and buy it, you won't regret it

  • Very capable bluetooth module

    posted by OzTrev on 07:01:54 G9T 09/09/2011

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: o Very capable bluetooth module with serial port profile
o Cheap price (even when compared to a certain auction site)
o Free planet wide transportation :-)

Cons: The distance between pins is not your standard 2.54mm and not even your Xbee non-standard 2mm - it's less. You will need to solder this to a board of some type. Luckily, you need only connect a few pins (hint: use plenty of flux when soldering)

Other: If you're considering buying one, take my advice and buy two now. It comes in very handy for adding short-range (10 meters) wireless control to any robot or other device.

  • Cheap, but bad documentation

posted by markusb on 10:41:33 G9T 19/09/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: The module is well built, and works well. Also it of cheaper here that everywhere else.

Cons: Documentation is a disaster, there is no data sheet supplied, even pinout is a user supplied picture !

Other: Cheap, works, but you've got to search for the documentation.

  • Notes on using Bluetooth modules

posted by dbodnar on 03:02:35 G9T 24/09/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Fairly easy to interface to a microcontroller or PC Well build All units (I purchased 4) worked when tested

Cons: Documentation lacking - I have gathered information from various sources and tested the Deal Extreme units based on the suggestions I found. Some things worked and some did not.

Other: Best price if you are willing to do some work soldering and sorting through online documents

  • Very good quality

posted by defconhaya on 12:16:49 G10T 20/10/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: The manufacture quality is pretty amazing. The device is smaller than I anticipated but soldering it should raise no problem even for a beginner into electronics and diy. It works great in combination with Arduino so you should go for it !

Cons: The lack of technical details may be a little inconvenient but look into the forums for datasheets or example programs/applications.

Other: Overall it's the best deal you can get !
From home made automation to robot guidance or any experiment you can think of, this module is great. That's it should not miss from any electronist box !

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

    Pros: - Nice build quality
    - Easely solderable
    - Good tx/rx distance, something like 7m with my motoDefy
    - Reliable serial link

Cons: - There isn't any 'real' documentation or datasheet

Other: This BT module has really simplified things in my project (http://instructables.com/id/Android-RC-Car/), the serial link is reliable, and the transmit/receive distance is quite good for this price.

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: -ability to change baud rate (before pairing)
    -flexible for any application
    -easy to use
    -excellent price-quality ratio
    -great build quality

Cons: -not a very good documentation support
-need some ability to solder terminals
    -the dongle is really small
-no led pair status build on PCB (you need to solder it if you want it)

Other: Despite the lack of documentation support and the need to solder, this dongle do everything what its says. If you need this dongle to your applications my advise is... don't hesitate, buy it!

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Easy to connect with Arduino. I made a shield and I have around 10 meters range. I used Ubuntu with 2 programs: bluetooth gestor and a virtual terminal. I send characters that are recieved with arduino combined with the shield. Remember to remove the shield to program Arduino.

Cons: I havent found Specifications, but I founded a schematic in this web. There is not need to conect pin 34 with a jumper to 3,3 volts

    Other: I'll buy another one.

  • Good module, but no documentation

posted by Salviati on 17:51:27 G11T 14/11/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Its a great little module. It`s not difficult to use and does not require external components of any kind to use with TTL level. It can handle TTL serial with no problem.
(ATTENTION: to connect to PC, you will need a level converter)

Cons: It has NO documentation whatsoever, so you have to browse around for some. The diagrams shown here from other users is OK, but the module can do so much more I regret it has no documentation with it. A site would do just fine.
IT SHOULD have a DIP package option for the amateur user. The pads are really small and one should use paste solder to have a good job done.

Other: BUY IT! I`ll buy one or two more.
As you can see, it`s a very easy way of adding a BT device for your project. I have testes with my PC and with PIC micro-controllers and it just works like a charm!
I hope the information posted can help you use it better!
